Chapter XII: “A
new demon is born”
Van ran all the
way to his house and just when he reached the door, he stopped to cry with
desperation and just vomited. He couldn’t handle the things that were happening
in his surroundings, it was just too much for him to handle. That was when he
remembered that his mom had the keys to his uncle’s house; he was supposedly
the responsible of watching over there. He entered and went directly to his
mom’s bedroom to get his uncle’s house keys.
Arthur:
Where
the hell you think you are going?! (He shouted as soon as he saw Van heading
rapidly upstairs)…Hey! Come back here this instant!!!
Van ignored his
father and went directly to his mom’s dressing table and began to search for
the keys, he was so nervous that everything he touched fell. Making a mess
until he found the keys and tried quickly to run out but, as soon as he reached
the hallway, his father was already waiting for him.
Arthur:
You
are not going anywhere young man, not until you explain to me where the hell
you spent the night.
Van:
I
don’t… have the time right now dad… (With his sight lowered).
Arthur:
That’s
enough mister! You are no longer gonna treat me with disrespect! ( Slapping Van
on his left cheek).
Van, completely
devoured by madness lifted his face that showed the hate trapped inside of him
throughout the pressure and emotions of the past events, his face, pale and his
eyes red; Arthur realized, then, that Van was covered with blood all over.
Van:
I
said… I don’t have the time!!! (As the last words escaped from his lips the
walls seemed to crumble).
Arthur:
Van…
(Extremely surprised) I…I’m sorry (Now with fear).
Van:
It
doesn’t matter now, you can’t stop it… (Walking toward Arthur).
Arthur:
Van…
Van… (Stepping back with fear).
Van:
It
is the end…
Arthur:
You…
you are not my son…stay back!
Van:
What
would you do if I don’t?…
Arthur:
(Turning
back to the window at the end of the hallway and almost crying with fear)
Help!!!…help!!!… stay back!! I said!!! (Turning back to Van).
As Van
approached Arthur closer and closer, he felt in fear more and more until Arthur’s
back hit the window, breaking it; falling all the way down. Van approached to
the broken window’s edge and looked down where the body of his agonizing father
laid, still drown in hate. He felt the wind touching his face and closed his
eyes to enjoy it. Somehow that made him less pale and his eyes returned to
their normal color as he opened them slowly. He looked at his father’s body
again and dropping on his knees, he started crying.
Van:
Dad…
(Crying).
Randomly in his
lament, he turned his sight to the street that could be easily seeing by the
window and there he saw a paralyzed Alex, shocked by what he had seen. As soon
as Alex got aware of Van, he ran frightened. Van tried to run down the street
to stop him but, it was too late.
Numbed like
never before on his life, Van took whatever was left of his sanity and decided
to go to his uncle Vince’s place. Once there, Van began his search on all the
wardrobes and drawers until, in one of them, he found what he was searching
for… a gun.
Van:
I
never thought I would come to this…Is this all real?... Am I dreaming? Am I
still asleep?...
Isabella:
(Talking
on the phone, crying) Courtney!!! Courtney is Van there with you???
Courtney:
Ms.
Lamark, are you ok? What happened?…
Isabella:
Where
is my son??!!! I just got home and… oh my god!!!…
Courtney:
Ms.
Lamark, What’s wrong? Why are you crying?
Isabella:
Arthur!
Arthur is dead!!!…
Courtney:
Oh!
my god…
Isabella:
And
I… I… can’t find Van anywhere!
Courtney:
Ms.
Lamark I… I haven’t seen Van since this morning but don’t worry I’ll find him…
Isabella:
Please,
I just don’t know what to do (still crying).
Courtney:
Don’t
worry I will find him… (Hanging up).
Van took the gun
and put it in one of his pockets, got out leaving the messed up home behind and
in the oblivion. He walked and walked searching for a distant forgotten corner
where he could be alone. And, once he found a place where no soul was around, a
forgotten street where some manufacturing warehouses were established, he
entered one of the abandoned warehouses. Taking the gun out, and, pointed it to
his forehead. With desperation and sweat, paleness attacked him again and a
strong breathing too. Closing his eyes he tried to pull the trigger but he just
couldn’t, the image of Lyn’s cold bloodied body couldn’t let him do it.
Sly:
(Coming
out of the darkness of the walls) Come on, do it, just… do it.
Van:
(Taking
the gun down, but without releasing it) Why?... Why me? Why are you doing this
to me?...
Sly:
It
is simple, you are gifted, but you are not the only one. We, the sons of light,
are the ones who measure the gifted children, we are the sanity, the pureness
of the world and our job is to protect it from fallen souls like yours…
Van:
How
can you tell?...
Sly:
You
mean how did we know you were the one we were searching for?; It’s easy, as I
said before, you are not the only one, I may not be able to see it with my
eyes, but I can see through the flesh, that is my gift…
Van:
Gift?!!!
This ain’t a gift!!! It is a curse that has only destroyed my life!
Sly:
That
is why you must sacrifice yourself, so you don’t hurt humanity anymore…
Van:
No…
Sly:
Come
on, just pull the trigger and end this!
Van:
No!
(Answering with hate and anger, pointing the gun to Sly while other two persons
dressed like Sly came out of the darkness of the walls as well) You are wrong;
I am not the person you are looking for…
Sly:
Stop
lying to yourself, come on, this is useless.
Van:
I
will not let you do this!!! (Turning pale and with red colored eyes again as a
strong current of wind hit out of nowhere).
Sly surprised by
the event for a second, and then snapping out of it tried to hit Van, forcing
Van dropped the gun with the punch.
Van:
I
will show you my true destiny!
Touching him on
the forehead with his hand, Sly, instantly dropped to the floor and on his
knees, as Van rapidly did the same to the other two mysterious characters
paralyzing them in the floor.
Turning around, somehow
his eyes and paleness returned to normality and with a short tear dropping he
picked up the gun and went out, leaving the paralyzed assassins behind.
Sly and the
others then watched with terror as a mysterious being with a sword in hand
slashed their bodies through, a vision they could not believe and that made
them even more numbed.
As Van stepped
out, another person entered, darkness couldn’t make the assassins tell who it
was, and as soon as Sly’s gifted eyes saw him, the terror was invading him over.
Sly:
No!
It can’t be! You…you…
Demon:
You
were wrong…
Sly:
But!
But!... I…
Demon:
Don’t
worry, I’ll make it quick…(Unfolding a sword, the same sword that Courtney saw
on Lance’s car, and extended it in front of the defenseless assassins).
