Chapter VIII:
“Guns and Rings”
Walking towards
Van’s house.
Courtney:
So…
what happened?
Van:
Court,
I've been having these strange visions…
Courtney:
How
is that?…
Van:
I've
been having these kind of really violent dreams, but, without being asleep…
Courtney:
What
kind of violent dreams?
Van:
Well
in them, people die just in front of my eyes and I can’t do a thing except
stand there and watch.
Courtney:
That’s
really… spooky… I’m sure it’s maybe some kind of stress, I mean sometimes when
you are under a lot of stress you begin to see things that aren’t really
happening.
Van:
I
guess so… Although I feel it so real, I can’t explain it.
Courtney:
What
you need is a good rest, you haven’t slept well lately.
Van:
You
are right, maybe it’s just that, well here we are, my house I feel much better
now.
Courtney:
And
Van (Grabbing his right hand)… If there is anything you need to tell me, you
tell me, I don’t want you to bottle it up on that head of yours like you always
do. Remember, I’m here for you.
Van:
I
will…And Court, you know I love you, right?
Courtney:
Of
course I do and I love you (Kissing before each one takes their path).
Van:
Can
I see you later?…
Courtney:
If
you feel good, of course you can! (With a smile).
Van enters home finding
a surprised face on his arrival.
Isabella:
Van!
What happened? Are you ok? Why are you here so early?
Van:
I’m
ok mom, don’t worry I just felt a little sick and Courtney insisted on me coming
home.
Isabella:
Are
you sure?
Van:
Yes,
don’t worry.
Isabella:
Well
ok… I’m making coffee, you want some?
Van:
Sure,
sounds good.
Isabella:
(Phone
rings and Isabella answers) Hello?…yes?… Oh! Vince it's you…wait a second will
you…Van can you go outside to the backyard and bring me another coffee jar from
the storage, this one is empty…
Van:
Sure…
Isabella:
Thanks
honey… Ok Vince continue…
Van went outside
as his mother asked him and walked towards the little storage shed they had
build to keep supplies. When he extended his hand to grab the lock, instantly,
he noticed the lock was open. Suddenly he felt a cold breeze striking his body as
well as the entire backyard. He ignored the cold chill and as he opened the
storage shed, took the new coffee jar and closed the door a voiced made itself
present.
Voice:
So,
we finally meet…
Van:
What???…
Who… who said that?
Van looked at
someone appearing from behind one of the nearby trees, it was a white man,
covered with an old brown rope, you could see he was wearing white clothing underneath,
white silk gloves with a strange script on them and the most impressive, and
maybe, characteristic feature could be that his eyes were almost between a gray
and white color. Yellow short spiky hair and on the front a couple of white
hair strings.
Man:
So
it is you, you don’t seem like a real threat…
Van:
Who
are you? And what do you want?
Man:
The
name is Sly and I was sent here to finish you, demon.
Van:
What
the hell are you talking about?
Sly:
Such
a shame you, don’t seem that tough.
Pulling a gun
out of the rope and pointing it to Van. Suddenly a scream interrupted the
commotion.
Isabella:
(From
inside the house) Van! Hurry up, will you!
Van quickly
turned his head to the door hoping her mom would not be there to witness the
shocking scene. Then, as quickly as he saw that her mom was still inside, he
turned his head back to the assailant only to discover that he was alone in the
backyard. He stood there, confused for a couple of seconds and then headed back
inside.
Isabella:
What
took you so long?
Van:
I
just… couldn’t find it.
Isabella:
Your
uncle called and asked if it would be possible for you to watch over his place,
cause he is gonna go hunting at the mountains.
Van:
Sure
why not…
Isabella:
Sometimes
I think your uncle is a bad influence on you with all his guns and hunting ideas.
Van:
Mom,
don’t be ridicules.
Isabella:
Oh!
I almost forgot, I have something for you, I just found it this morning.
Van:
Yeah,
what is it?
Isabella:
It’s
my ring… the one that your father gave to me when he promised our love would
last forever.
Van:
And
why are you giving me something so precious to you?
Isabella:
Well,
I figured it would be a perfect gift for Courtney…
Van:
Are
you sure about this mom?
Isabella:
Positively.
Isabella then,
took the ring and gave it to his son. To Van that white gold ring was a stupid,
meaningless old ring and nothing more.
Van:
Thanks
mom, this would actually be a really nice gift for Court.
Later that day
Van decided to go visit Courtney. And as he got there he rang the bell watching
how a smiling Courtney opened the door.
Courtney:
Hi!
Van:
Hi
baby… (Kissing).
Courtney:
Are
you feeling better?
Van:
Of
course! I feel so good that, actually, I brought you something really special.
Courtney:
A
surprise! What is it!
Van:
Well,
is not something exactly new, but, it has a lot of value, I mean emotional
value.
Courtney:
Come
on let me see it!
Van:
My
dad gave this to my mom as a promise of eternal love, now I want to give it to
you with the same promise (Giving the ring to Courtney).
Courtney:
Oh
Van! You shouldn’t have! This must mean a lot to your parents.
Van:
Actually
my mom gave it to me and told me that you should have it.
Courtney:
Ow!
How sweet… (Kissing again).
In that precise
moment a car (black and somewhat old) approached the two of them stepping Lance
out of it.
Lance:
Courtney,
can you help me with the homework? Oh! Am I interrupting something?
Van:
No…
actually I have to go…
Lance:
Are
you sure? Cause I can come back later…
Van:
No,
that’s ok.
Courtney:
(In
a low voice) Don’t go…
Lance:
Sorry
I feel like I am interrupting things, I actually called your place Van but you
weren’t there. That’s why I decided to come here with Courtney.
Van:
That’s
ok, I have things to do (Turning back from Courtney and letting her hand go, upset
by the timing but pretending not to be bothered).
Lance:
I’m
really sorry…
Courtney:
