Chapter IX: “The
glasses hit the floor Part I”
As time went by,
Van arrived home. Darkness already covered the sky, late hours beginning to
come out and play. As always, he entered quietly as if his mind was elsewhere
but his body endured.
Arthur:
(Sitting
in the couch next to the door watching T.V. in the living room) Where were you?
Van:
I
just went for a walk.
Arthur:
Yeah,
like you’re gonna fool me; you went to see that girlfriend of yours.
Van:
Well
actually I did, so what?
Arthur:
You
are not gonna talk to me with that tone!
Van:
Well
it’s because I don’t see why it is a problem of Courtney being my girlfriend!!!
Arthur:
Shut
up and don’t shout at me, I am your father, show me some respect!
Van:
That’s
because I’m tired of you being an ass to Courtney all the time!
Arthur:
Shut
your mouth! See this is why I don’t approve that girl, ever since you've known her
you have been changing and not for the best.
Van:
You
know what, just forget it, this is a waste of time (Turning his back and
heading upstairs).
Arthur:
It
seems like that woman only brings you problems, I bet she’s gonna get one of
you killed one of this days.
Van:
What???…What
did you just said!!??? (Turning back toward his dad with fury on sight).
Isabella:
(Coming
down the stairs) What is happening?
Van:
You
better understand dad, she is my choice so deal with it (Heading upstairs once
more).
Arthur:
You
better forget her; it is you who has to understand she is the wrong choice and will
lead you to chaos.
Isabella:
Arthur!…
As soon as Van entered
his bedroom he slammed the door. Listening his parents still arguing, he laid down
on the bed and slowly fell asleep. Hours later Van opened his eyes, it was past
midnight and the phone was ringing. With curiosity, he opened his bedroom’s
door and stuck his head out to see if anyone was going to answer the phone. His
parent’s bedroom door was closed and it didn’t seem like that was going to
change, so he decided to answer. He then rushed downstairs to get the phone.
Van:
Hello…?
Miranda:
Van, it’s me, Miranda…
Van:
Miranda?
How did you get my number?
Miranda:
Sorry,
I’m kinda in a hurry; say is Lyn there with you?
Van:
What?
No! Why would she be here?…
Miranda:
Thing
is, I can’t find her, she ran away and I don’t know where she is!
Van:
Why
would she run away?
Miranda:
Honey,
I don’t know but I need to find her or Max is gonna kill me.
Van:
…Huh…Maybe
I do know where she is…
Miranda:
Really?!
Where?!
Van:
I’m
not sure, but I’ll go out to search for her, if I find her I’ll bring her home
to you.
Miranda:
Thanks
honey, hope you have better luck than I did.
Van:
Ok…
(Hanging up).
Van took the
keys and a dark coat and headed out. He walked in the cold night for several
streets until he made his way to the one place he was sure he could find her,
the same place they met. And so she was, in the middle of darkness, sitting in
the same spot where she had found him. Her eyes lost in a stared sky, wind
playing slowly with her hair.
Van:
I
thought I’d find you here…
Lyn:
(With
a little short smile and low voice) And why is that?
Van:
I
don’t know I just did…
Lyn:
You
know, there is nothing to say when there isn’t anyone really there to listen… (Taking
her eyes back to the sky).
Van:
(Sitting
next to her) Is that why you are always that quiet?
Lyn:
Perhaps…
(With another smile and looking back to Van).
Van:
But,
then, why are you talking now?
Lyn:
You
silly, it is because there’s… there’s something in you that makes me feel that
is worth it…
Van:
(Shy)
Really…? But, what about your family?
Lyn:
Don’t
take me the wrong way but I don’t really feel as part of that family, I mean, I
barely see my mom or dad ‘cause they travel a lot and Max has his own life,
Miranda, well… she soon will forget about me… everyone is taking their own way…
there is no real family…
Van:
Sometimes
I feel the same…
Lyn:
I
feel like… there is something else for me, you know?… like there's something I
was born and destined to do, something out of the ordinary…
Van:
How
is that?
Lyn:
Forget
it; you'd probably think it’s a silly childish thought…
Van:
No,
I mean in what kind of out of the ordinary way?
Lyn:
I
don’t know, maybe a way to understand more than just the physical world…
Van:
You
mean spiritually?
Lyn:
Yes,
something beyond…
Van:
That’s
creepy, trust me…
Lyn:
Have
you had any experience with something like that?
Van:
Not
really…
Lyn:
Come
on; tell me I won’t make fun of it.
Van:
No,
I just think if something like that happened to me, I wouldn’t know what to do.
Lyn:
Oh…well
you would deal with it, that’s how I see it.
Van:
So,
your sister called me, she was looking for you, we should go to your house so
she doesn’t get more worried.
Lyn:
Don’t
change the subject; you know the fear to these kinds of taboo themes is what keeps
humanity in a blind spot…
Van:
You
are really smart for a girl your age (With a short smile).
Lyn:
I
like to read a lot, I have a lot of free time so I kinda sneak in to my dad’s
study room at home and read his books.
Van:
Your
dad read about this stuff?
Lyn:
You
could say he’s more than a fan.
Van:
Wow!
Maybe he could…
Lyn:
He
could what?…
Van:
Never
mind, let’s get you home shall we?
Lyn:
Can
I just… I…I don’t want to go home, at least not yet… can we stay here just a
little longer?…
Van:
S…sure
I don’t think that’s a problem.
Lyn:
Thanks…
