Chapter II: “The
labyrinth”
Vince:
Really?
Did that really happened?
Van:
Well…
yes.
Vince:
Where
you out of your mind or something? You can’t really expect to treat Courtney
like that! What were you thinking?
Van:
I
know, I know I’m wrong but, I can’t control it, I just keep screwing it up.
Vince:
Well
offer her an apology…
Van:
I
don’t think is that simple, I mean, not this time…
Vince:
Did
you make her cry?
Van:
…Yes
(With shame on his face).
Vince:
Son,
you have to learn to control yourself, it is very logical to lose your temper
in situations like that, but, if you just stop for one
second and think about it, you will see that in life is best to reason your
feelings in to patience, only then you can act with a clear vision and emotions
won’t confuse you, they will guide you.
Van:
I
guess… I guess I can try that.
Vince:
(With
a short wise laugh) you are still so naive… Now go and talk to her.
Van still
confused walked slowly away from that park, with many questions in his mind,
thinking how to ask her for forgiveness. Leaving his uncle Vince behind
enjoying one of his only hobbies, feeding birds in the park. To most of the old
people like himself this brings him happiness.
Van
walked the sidewalk viewing his second obsession, the sky. To Van the sky was
something so pure and mysterious that could capture his mind for hours, viewing
at that moment, a cloudy sky. Maybe it’s going to rain? He asked himself. Maybe
the sky knows that Courtney is sad and it wants to cry by her shoulder? So he
kept asking himself those questions over and over again until his steps lead
him to Courtney’s house. Once there, he wanted to run to Courtney’s arms but,
at the same time he didn’t, like every time someone has to ask for forgiveness,
the nerves seem to break you in half.
So
there he was about to knock the door but without doing so, suddenly Ms. Martha
Robins, Courtney’s mother, opened the door with a strange, warming smile and
said:
Ms.
Robins:
I’m
very glad that you came, please come on in…
Van:
Ms.
Robins is… is Courtney home?
Ms.
Robins:
Van,
you know perfectly well that she is here and you also know why she has been
crying…
Van:
Ms.
Robins I’m…
Ms.
Robins:
Don’t
have to tell me nothing, I’m glad you came, that means you do care for her.
With
short-unsafely steps he took the stairs and headed up, once on the second floor
the white narrow hallway seemed so long and far, it seemed like if it were
covering him in a white sheet of hallucinating hope. The windows never seemed
so bright, absorbing every single ray of light, and a soft wind blow made the
curtains float touching Van’s arms as he passed thru.
Van:
Courtney???…
(A
fateful cry escaping the last room can only be heard).
Van:
Co…Courtney???…
It’s me Van…
Almost running,
Van hurried his steps to find a fragile Courtney destroyed in tears, he took
her by his arms and cleaning up her tears with his hands he repeated the same
words over and over again “I am so sorry…” crying a few tears more, the couple
kissed.
Van:
I
am such an imbecile, can’t seem to stop hurting you…I just don’t deserve you.
Courtney:
You
know I wouldn’t be able to live without you.
Van:
Can
you forgive me? I swear I won’t do it again.
Courtney:
I
don’t want you to swear to me, I want you to really mean it.
Van:
Yes…
I will…
Courtney:
You
know every time we fight, we swear not to fight again but still we do…
Van:
Are
you?… Are you breaking up with me?
Courtney:
Don’t
be silly, I just told you I can’t live without you!
Van:
Then???…
Courtney:
Let’s
just drop this non-sense…
Van:
Yes…
let’s do that…
Courtney:
What?
Is something wrong?…
Van:
It’s
only that… it hurts me you know… to see you like this, cause of me…
Courtney:
Van,
just drop it, ok? There is no point of continuing this conversation (With a
serious voice).
Van:
Ok…
just don’t kill me (sarcastically).
Courtney:
(Laughing
with a soft goofy laugh) Come on Van I’m being serious.
Van:
Me
too, I do fear for my safety you know.
Courtney:
(Still
laughing) You are such a goofball.
Van:
Nah…I
just love to see you smile.
Courtney:
Come…
let me show you something (Grabbing Van by the hand and pulling him out of the
room).
Van:
What?…
Courtney:
Come
on Van! The sky is clearing.
Van:
But
it’s almost Sunset.
Courtney:
Just
follow me; come on it’s a surprise.
She took Van to
a second stairway just beside Courtney’s room, hidden in what appeared to be
another room’s door. The stairways lead to another door from which the rays of
light could escape from the door’s border. As soon as Courtney opened the door,
the rays intensified and Van now could see that it was the rays of the sun and
that the door was a path right to the roof of Courtney’s house.
Courtney:
This
is my favorite place to be.
As soon as Van
let go of Courtney’s hand to cover the sun light from his eyes, still
impressed, and with a quick look at his own hand, he saw blood dripping from
the palm of it, dressed in fear he turned back just one step and slipped off
the stairs. Courtney, then with a quick heroic move, grabbed Van by the arm
just before he fell.
Courtney:
Are
you ok? What’d happened?
Van:
(With
his knees on the roof and seeing his hand one more time, discovering that it
didn’t have anything at all) Nnn…nothing… I’m fine.
Courtney:
(With
doubt in her eyes) Are you sure?
Van:
Yeah…I
think. Wow! This is beautiful; it really is an impressive view.
With both of
them sitting in the roof holding to each other, with their eyes focusing on the
envying beauty of the sunset, seeing how the sky seem to die before their eyes,
they stood.
